Technology Show Highlights Opportunities for Business

De Montfort University (DMU) will be opening its doors to business next week to showcase its cutting-edge research.

The university’s Technology Showcase on Thursday 15 September 2011 will provide businesses with the opportunity to explore the potential for working with DMU in a wide range of disciplines.

Experts representing engineering, science, sustainability, computing and the creative industries will be on hand to demonstrate their latest research, explain their areas of expertise and discuss areas for possible collaboration.

“This is an opportunity for us to showcase De Montfort University’s expertise to key decision-makers in all sorts of industries,” said Professor Philip Moore, director of research at DMU.

“Our research could have applications in areas as diverse as healthcare and the motor industry, so this event is designed to put our experts in touch with those seeking solutions to a wide range of business challenges.

“It’s a case of matching up our research teams with the right company – and establishing a relationship that could be extremely beneficial for both parties.”

Visitors will also have the chance to tour the labs and studios, take part in workshops and experience the latest DMU advances in the Interactive Technology Zone.

Displays will include a demonstration of Eye Gaze – the latest high-speed eye-tracking technology that makes mobile devices hands-free – and a presentation of the iCheev® system.

iCheev® – an online thinking toolkit – is the result of a recent collaboration between Go MAD Thinking and DMU. The university’s computational intelligence experts have helped the company embody the knowledge and experience of a human coach in an online system.

There will also be a demonstration of the Lean Operations Group’s virtual reality software that simulates factory conditions and allows work areas and systems to be reorganised, without the risks associated with testing out the changes on the shop floor.

“DMU was founded to support Leicester’s industry with research that would help businesses grow and with ideas that made the most of technological advances,” said Professor Heidi Macpherson, pro vice-chancellor research and innovation.

“That ethos continues today – although now, of course, our collaborations with industry extend far beyond local boundaries.

“The latest Research Assessment Exercise rated 43 per cent of DMU’s research activity as being either internationally excellent or world leading – and that’s the expertise we want to share with our partners in industry.”

DMU’s Technology Showcase has been successfully matching research projects with industry since 2004.

The annual event is aimed at decision-makers working in research and development, IT and funding in a broad range of industries, including aerospace, defence, digital media, electronics, energy, entertainment, healthcare, nanotechnologies, new product development, pharmaceuticals, textiles and telecommunications.

To reserve your place at this year’s event – which includes a complimentary buffet lunch – please call 0116 250 6339 or book online at www.dmu.ac.uk/techshowcase.

Full details of the research groups that will be participating in the showcase, and more information about working in collaboration with DMU, are also available on the website.

DMU’s Technology Showcase will take place in the Campus Centre on Bonners Lane in Leicester from 9.30am until 3pm on Thursday 15 September.
