Derbyshire companies lead the way on new Insider list

A Mansfield-headquartered sportswear giant has topped Insider's inaugural league table of the top 200 companies across Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.

A high street homeware retailer and the world's largest producer of lead are also riding high on the list, which ranks companies based on a combination of their turnover and profitability.

Three of the top five companies in the first-ever Sheffield City Region Top 200 are based in the East Midlands, including MASH Holdings, through which Mike Ashley holds stakes in Sports Direct and Newcastle United.

The group reported £542m in pre-tax profits for the year to 30 April 2014 and revenues of £2.82bn

The results ended what was a turbulent year for Ashley, who lost a fight for control of Scottish football club Rangers, and for Sports Direct, which was criticised by politicians for employing the majority of its staff on zero-hours contract.

Matlock-based Ecobat Technologies, the world's largest producer of lead and lead alloys for lead-acid battery manufacturing, also secured third place despite turnover falling from £1.62bn to £1.5bn.

Rounding off the top five were building materials supplier SIG (2), Worksop-headquartered Wilko Retail (4) and Keepmoat (5).

The performance of a business is measured by a combination of their turnover and profitability. They are first ranked by turnover and then again by pre-tax profit. The two rankings are averaged and the Top 200 is drawn in order from that list.

Only companies with registered offices in the region are included and all figures are taken from the latest returns at Companies House.

Other East Midlands companies to appear on the list include Ford car and van dealer TC Harrison and Chesterfield's Greencore Food to Go.
